Norman Beede

Norman Beede is Senior Musician at the UCI where he teaches Music for Dancers, plays for ballet and modern classes, and composes and produced music for the students and faculty.  He was on the Faculty of the American Dance Festival in 2001 & 2002, ABY (2001), and RAD (2003-04). 

He attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and California Institute of the Arts from 1968-1971. He studied classical and 20th Century piano literature with Robert Helps, Bernhard Abramowitsch, Johanna Harris, and James Tenney while at SFCM and CAL-ARTS.  His private studies have included jazz with Milcho Leviev and theory, composition and improvisation with W.A. Mathieu.  He has been a member of several improvisational ensembles, the most notable being The Ghost Opera (1970), Readymade (1982-84), Open Gate Theatre (1991-93), and most recently Wiperfluid (2002-2004).  He was Music Director (UCI) for the 2002 Internet2 concert of livemusic and dance performedsimultaneously at UCI and NYU to a live internet audience.

Mr Beede has written over fifty scores and soundscapes for dance and theatre including for choreographers Loretta Livingston, Lisa Naugle, Collin Connors, Rudy Perez, Nita Little and Eloy Barrigan. He has been a keyboard consultant for Fender Instruments and was once the truck driver for the Don Ellis Orchestra (1971 Midwest Tour).  Norman is Music Director at Neighborhood Congregational Church in Laguna Beach, CA and teaches improvisation and classical technique in his home there.
